Nuformex – Not Your Average Machine Shop!

Nuformex Inc. emerges from the manufacturing division of Transformix Engineering Inc., offering 20 years of manufacturability expertise in Precision Machining for the Automation Industry.

In December of 2018, Transformix Engineering’s Intellectual Property, including its disruptive, high precision, high-performance advanced manufacturing technology CNCAssembly® (now ATS’s Symphoni™) were acquired by ATS Automation Tooling.

Key to Transformix’s success was the machine shop team led by Clay Crosby, Paul Steele and George Brunner. Upon completion of Transfomix projects, the team re-emerged under its own corporation, Nuformex Inc., offering services and expertise that fill a gap within the automation industry. Precision automation equipment like CNCAssembly® requires exceptional machinists who understand tight tolerances and intricate parts. These skills are intrinsic and transcend all manufacturing industries that demand quality and accuracy in machining.

“When creating Nuformex, we saw that there was a unique opportunity to collaborate with our Production Partners who were looking for a machine shop that went above and beyond” remarked Paul Steele, Manufacturing Manager and Partner in Nuformex Inc. “We knew with our combined knowledge in manufacturability, on-demand prototyping, quick turn-around, design intent and working with R&D teams and Engineers; we were more than ‘just’ a machine shop. We understood the intricacies of helping businesses grow and getting their products to market quickly.”

To highlight this point, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nuformex was enlisted by a global automation company to tool a machine that assembled cartridges for COVID testing. The Nuformex team programmed, machined and produced one hundred and seventy-four part numbers in 8 weeks, while still maintaining deliverables for their other clients.

“We’re about forming relationships with our clients, and we see ourselves as part of their production team,” said Clay Crosby, Operations Manager and Nuformex Partner, “We are passionate about what we do, and it shows through our team’s dedication in meeting our clients’ requests, no matter the challenge. In every step of the process, from RFQ to parts integration, we ensure continuity in our partners’ supply chains. Whether your delivery requirements are JIT, or you’re looking at a stocking program, we’ve got your back.”

With a history firmly rooted in the development of automation machines under the Transformix banner, Nuformex understands the principles of machine building. They recognize the pressures on North American manufacturing and the innovation & creativity required to be successful.

“Crisis Averted! Behind The Scenes Front-Line Workers.”

A NUFORMEX TALE

When COVID19 pandemic first entered our lives, no one knew how this would be our new ‘normal.’

With social distancing, businesses shutting down, continuously sanitizing our hands as our lives depended upon it and wearing masks soon became a daily part of our lives.

Very quickly, government officials reached out to companies to produce more masks, testing kits and hand sanitizers, which hit the manufacturing industry like wildfire. Suddenly, people who built businesses producing their own products began to switch over their automation to answering the ‘call of the people.’ One of our Production Partners was the first to step up to the plate, and they enlisted Nuformex to come along for the ride!

Over a span of 8 weeks, our team programmed, machined and produced one-hundred and seventy-four part numbers for our Production Partner, contracted to build a machine that assembled cartridges for COVID testing. Not only did we deliver on-time and on-budget, but we also met the demands of our other Production Partners. Our Nuformex team never wavered in getting the work done on weekends and into the wee hours of the night. Dedication to helping others is our mantra!

“You Want It When? Challenge Accepted!”

A NUFORMEX TALE

You know the expression ‘It’s a small world’? Well, we experienced this first hand with one of our clients.

One of our clients, an engineer at General Electric (GE), spoke with his twin brother, who worked in Brazil for Syngenta’s global agricultural company.

Now Syngenta was faced with a dilemma! Over the years, they spent millions of dollars working with other advanced manufacturing companies that only resulted in failures that had to be scrapped.

Their challenge was trying to cut and separate the nodes from sugarcane without destroying the plant. However, each time they tried different machines by other manufacturers, the plant would be destroyed.

Enter Nuformex, the team that machined all the manufacturing parts for Transformix. Our GE client told his Syngenta twin brother, that they should give us all call as we never back down from a challenge. Long story short, we delivered EXACTLY what they needed, much to their surprise.

We had no previous experience working in the agricultural sector. Do we have years of experience working in the Advanced Manufacturing, Consumer Goods, Energy, Life Science, and Transportation sectors? Yes, we do! Did we back down from a new opportunity? Absolutely not!

“Who Knew A Napkin Would Be So Valuable?”

A NUFORMEX TALE

We received a phone call from a guy telling us about an idea that he had for a casting he wanted to produce. As he began explaining it over the phone, he stopped himself short and said, ‘Why don’t I just swing by and show you what I’ve got.

Within the hour, he was at our office and pretty excited by his idea. We expected to see the typical technical CAD drawing layout rolled-out on the table. Instead, he started fumbling around his coat pockets with a worried look in his eye. Upon finding his lost treasure, he exclaimed, ‘THERE IT IS! I KNEW I had it on me somewhere!

He had designed a part done initially as a casting, hand-sketched on a crumpled paper napkin. He was looking for us to create the piece machined from solid. After chatting for a bit, we determined the best approach required to meet his needs. It was a great experience collaborating with him and to see how enthusiastic he was during the entire process.

He loved the end product so much that what was to be a single piece produced, we ended up providing him with 35 more ‘prototypes.’

“Family + Friend = Holiday Deadline Met!”

A NUFORMEX TALE

Imagine, December 2019. Rainy, cold and miserable. Everyone was ready for the much-needed reprieve from work and looking forward to celebrating the holidays with their family and friends. As the holiday approached, most of our staff was already off for  Christmas, but that didn’t stop us from helping out one of our Production Partners. They called seeking our help to meet a last-minute change in their customers’ deadline of December 28th.

Paul, one of our Nuformex partners, stepped up to the plate! Enlisting the help of his wife Heather, and Kris, owner of CROM Welding & Fabrication, Team ‘Family’ got to work!

With Heather helping Paul run the CNC Mills to produce the part and with Kris leading the charge for all the welding, we met our Production Partner’s deadline, and it was shipped to their customer right on time.

“Your Success Is Our Happy Place. We All Win!”

A NUFORMEX TALE

We had heard that one of our Production Partners was experiencing new growth in his business and wondered when the trickle-down effect would hit our team. A few months had passed, and nothing was coming our way, so we presumed that what we were producing was meeting his needs.

Next thing you know, we got a last-minute call with a request resulting in a massive spike to his regular order, and he needed it asap! Now, one thing we know is that a good machinist understands & strives for continuous improvement. So our team sat down for a joint brainstorming session to determine the best approach while maintaining our other Production Partners schedules and deliverables. At this meeting, one of our machinists came up with the idea that reduced the cycle time by a whopping 25%.

Not only were the savings passed on to our customer, but everyone’s schedules were maintained without a hitch.
